Kingmaker – Big Time Gaming’s Latest Creation
One of the most exciting things about Big Time Gaming is that, whenever they release a new slot game, you never know what you’re going to get. It could be a new feature that eventually becomes the latest trend or an entirely new mechanic that sets the tone for the entire iGaming industry. Triple Reaction, Megaways, Reel Adventure – the list of innovative ideas is quite extensive. Whatever your opinion of Big Time Gaming might be, you can’t accuse the Australian juggernaut of taking their core audiences for granted, as this is the developer that constantly finds ways to evolve and make the gaming experience more dynamic.
The same can be said for their latest creation Kingmaker which is arguably a continuation of Holy Driver. While their gameplay is entirely different, these two titles share a couple of key characteristics. For instance, both games take you back to the past where queens and kings ruled the land, knights fought for honour, and dragons roared high in the sky. Also, they’re both designed in a way to offer players a sense of progression by building up the intensity and tension throughout the gaming session.
Stunning Visuals
Despite the name, Kingmaker doesn’t actually feature any queens, kings, princes, or even lowly peasants for that matter. Instead, you get a medieval kingdom surrounded by snow-capped mountains and beautiful countryside. The gameboard is located in the centre of the screen and resembles a royal banner. The game also features quite a few gems coloured in red, green and purple, sporting heraldry style images with snakes, dragons, and minotaurs. The reels on which the symbols appear are designed to look like stained glass, allowing you to see the full landscape in various tints as the symbols spin down the screen.
Instead of royalty on the reels, the Kingmaker slot features the usual low value 9 through A card symbols and four special gems – green, red, blue and, BTG’s favourite, purple. The house of the dragon (purple) is the most rewarding symbol, and 2, 3, 4 or 5 of them appearing on a payline will give you up to 10x your stake. Also, there’s the Wild symbol which appears on reels two, three, four, and five, and substitutes for all other symbols but the Scatter. The Scatter is a golden crown which is the highest paying symbol, with 5 of them paying 250x the bet.
Like most BTG creations, Kingmaker is powered by the popular Megaways engine which gives you a random number of paylines on each spin. Kingmaker comes with five reels, which is why you get a maximum of 16,807 ways to win, instead of the usual 117,648.
Special Features
Kingmaker is a pretty straightforward game in terms of special features. The base game has great influence over the outcome of free spins. There is a gem multiplier feature that begins at 1x and gets a 1+ boost each time you land five of a kind gem combination. For example, if you were to form five of a kind across all five reels, the multiplier would increase from 1x to 2x, and so on. Also, there is the Wild symbol which appears on the reels two, three, four, and five, and replaces all the other symbols except for the Scatter.
It’s all round up with the Free spins feature which is triggered when three, four or five spinning crowns simultaneously appear in the view, giving you a hefty win of 4, 20, or 250x your stake as well as 7,12, or 20 Free spins respectively. Once unlocked, the Free spins feature will transfer you into a treasure chamber. The combination of all the gems you’ve collected during the base game will now become your starting win multiplier. Any wins during the bonus feature will be multiplied and, if it’s been a while since you’ve unlocked the feature, you could be looking at a massive amount.
Just like in the base game, five of a kind gemstones will boost your multiplier by one. Moreover, if more Scatters appear on the reels during the bonus feature, you will be awarded additional 7,12, or 20 Free spins. All in all, the game is highly volatile, giving you a chance to win up to 10,000x your stake in the Free spins game.
Betting Options and RTP
Being a fairly straightforward Megaways incarnation, the Kingmaker slot game has the potential to be both entertaining and rewarding. It’s aimed to low-to mid-stakes gamblers, with betting stakes ranging from €0.20 to €100 per spin. Needless to say, there are various options in between these limits. The game comes with a generous 96% RTP and has medium to high volatility.

Our Thoughts
For what is a pretty straightforward slot with one bonus feature, we’ve found that the Kingmaker is a surprisingly enjoyable creation. Contrary to most other slot games, Kingmaker is a game where you don’t want to activate the bonus feature too soon. There may not be any mystery symbols, cascading reels, or 100k+ ways to win, but what you do have is a solid slot with plenty of potential and the lucrative free spins mode which can pay off in a big way.
The low bonus frequency can be frustrating at times, and if you trigger the bonus too early, it can take a while before you trigger the bonus feature again. Be that as it may, it is well worth waiting for given that the bonus round guarantees you 17k ways to win on each spin. All in all, Kingmaker is a solid slot, albeit not as good as some other BTG’s creations. But its gameplay, simplicity, and bonus system make it a highly entertaining and potentially lucrative game in our eyes.
